The day started with pea soup mist and very wet at that. This can cause a tracking team some seriouse problems. We always plan to be self sufficient for 48hours, and a manhunt doesnt allow for a break to change clothing. Plus because there are occassions when a fast run on the quarry is needed, or uphill, you cant over-do your kit, but still need to carry what you need to keep the edge on your target. I never expect to be comfortable until the end of the follow-up, but at the same time I plan to keep dry and warm, despite times of dormancy, or exertion.
My kit for any UK folow up is:
Converse Desert Boots
Duty Belt, with Maxpedition Rolly Pollies(2), Surefire Torch, Extrema Ratio Kukri, Green Torch
Maxpedition Back-pack. joined to Duty belt with clips. Maxpedition Cocoons. Maxpedition Comms Pouch
Blackhawk Top, Ice Breaker T Shirt
Protein Energy bar & Snicker Bar
Binoculours & chest harness.
Sanyo Xacti HD camera
The kit I carry is high performance, and would not change the configuration.
Conditions on Dartmoor were challenging, especially for the crew, but as expected there were some twists in the tail.
James May Manlab series 2 will be aired in October. The tracking sequence will be part of the first program.
