Immediate Lost Person Procedure (ILLP Part 1)

The Immediate Lost Person Procedure (ILLP) is an action tool to be utilised immediately that someone is missing. It is a valuable tool for persons in charge and provides an action plan to search for persons lost whilst awaiting the arrival of the authorities.

The ILPP is essential to all outdoor instructors, outward bound schools, colleges, universities and schools and organisations that take people into the outdoors. Personnel who conduct field trips should be qualified in ILLP in order to reduce liability issues. It is a procedure which should be carried out urgently following the report of a member of a group becoming lost or missing. The procedure is designed to maximise the chances of finding those persons quickly efficiently and safely.

The ILPP gives the people in charge of the group a laid out strategy to deal with an incident of this kind.

The Course content is as follows:

  • Lost Person Procedure
  • The Immediate action to be taken in the event of a missing person
  • Risk assessment and hazards for the ILLP
  • The search organisations including search and rescue dogs and how they will respond.
  • The information the police will require and how you can assist them
  • The resources available to the police
  • Search techniques
  • Classroom based case studies
  • Field based case studies
  • Effective briefing to persons in the outdoors (action to be taken in the event of becoming lost).
  • Briefing the police on arrival.
  • Effective de-briefing of staff involved.
  • The benefits and methods of reducing stress on staff after a search.

The course will be conducted over one day and includes lost person behaviour, search techniques, case studies and classroom exercises. It will also include practical, field based exercises and scenarios. Any time a group of people are taken outdoors the person in charge should have the ability to carry out an effective, immediate search ,they should know the procedure to follow and have background knowledge of how the police and search organisations will respond.

The techniques are not a substitute for searches carried out by trained searchers including the police and civilian rescue organisations, they are aimed at maximising every minute that a person is missing.

This will dramatically improve the prospect of finding that person quickly.
