About Us

Shadowhawk specialises in training people to track.

There can be few pleasures greater than that of being able to track an animal in its natural environment, to understand its movements, its motivations and the effect it has within its surroundings.

Shadowhawk trains trackers in the UK and all around the world. The school was founded by Ian“Max” Maxwell the author of Animal Tracks ID and the presenter of Discovery Channel’s Big Cat Tracks and Max’s Big Tracks. He is responsible for training Government Organisations, Rangers and Police forces worldwide.

Ian "Max" Maxwell
has both trained and tracked with some of the worlds "first nation trackers” including African, Native American and South American people. You will not be able to pass through nature without feeling connected ever again. Max has heard people say that you should “respect the woods because you are only visiting” he disagrees and says you are never a guest in your own home; you should feel at home in the woods.

Max is a Fellow of The Royal Geographical Society and has been awarded the Winston Churchill Fellowship - for life; for his work in conservation.

Nick Mayell
Nick has spent his whole life enjoying the outdoors. Besides his family, the two passions in his life have always been tracking and fly fishing. His enthusiasm for the subject is relentless and when not teaching for Shadowhawk can usually be found educating local scout and explorer organisations on the subject of tracking and bushcraft.

He has been working for Max since the company started and specialises in wildlife and SAR tracking.

Nick sees tracking not just as a hobby but as a way of life!
